Sazón seasoning is essential in Dominican cooking, right next to adobo seasoning. I love using it in my habichuelas guisadas, pollo guisado, and so much more.

I also like using it in place of achiote oil to add color and flavor to my Dominican recipes.

Make your own seasonings for better control

Making your own sazón seasoning is such a game changer. You get to tweak the flavors just how you like them, skip any of those weird additives, and it’s usually cheaper than buying the pre-made stuff. Plus, it just tastes so much fresher and you get that little extra satisfaction of knowing you made it from scratch.

Easily make it salt-free

Finding a salt-free sazon can be tough, but with this recipe, you can simply leave out the salt and add it to your dish later to your taste.

What can you use in place of annatto powder?

If you don’t have access to annatto powder, you have some options. You can crush whole annatto seeds, substitute for ½ tbsp turmeric (though it will alter the flavor a bit), or substitute for ½ tbsp paprika.

How long does homemade sazón seasoning last?

Homemade sazón seasoning can last up to 6 months when stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. After that, the spices may lose some of their potency, but it’s still safe to use.
