Avena caliente is like a warm hug in a drinkable oatmeal form. Traditional oatmeal is typically served as a porridge, but Dominican style oatmeal is more of a drink, and isn’t limited to just breakfast.

And like most Dominican drinks, like chocolate con leche and cafe con leche, avena caliente is almost always served with a side for dipping, like crackers or toasted pan sobao. But you could also just grab a spoon and enjoy!

Lime peels is what gives this the signature taste

It adds a subtle hint of freshness that balances the warmth of all the spices we’re using like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Without it, the drink wouldn’t have the same distinct taste that makes it uniquely Dominican.

Use rolled oats not quick oats

Quick oats will still work for this recipe, but they’re not necessary since the oats get blended and cooked, breaking down into a smooth consistency regardless. Rolled oats are the better choice because they are less processed and have a heartier texture, which helps keep the avena caliente smooth and creamy instead of mushy.

Blending the oats makes it super smooth

But it’s totally optional. If you prefer a thicker avena that you can eat with a spoon, then feel free to skip blending the oats and just throw them into the pot with the milk, sugar, and spices.

For me, though, avena caliente is best served smooth, creamy, and easily sippable. Blending the rolled oats with the milk helps break them down, making the texture softer and ensuring a silky, drinkable consistency.
